Monroe County Jail Roster: Start With the Right Official Custody Report
For Monroe County, New York, start with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office rather than a third-party inmate directory. The Sheriff links separate Roster, Census, Received Report and Released Report resources for people held through its Jail Bureau.
The official roster and census are reported as updating daily Monday through Friday. If you need time-sensitive confirmation outside those updates, or a person’s status is unclear, call the jail’s incarcerated-individual information line at 585-753-4300.

Which Monroe County Report Should You Use?
Monroe County is unusual in that the Sheriff’s Office gives users several official custody reports rather than a single generic search box. Choosing the report that matches your question can save time.
Roster
Use the official roster when your first question is whether a person appears in the Sheriff’s current incarcerated-person listing.
Census
Use the census when you need more field-level custody information. The published report can include identifiers, booking/custody dates, court information, bail or bond fields, arresting agency and charge information.
Received Report
Use the received report when you are checking whether someone was recently received into the Monroe County jail system and may not yet be easy to locate in the report you first opened.
Released Report
For recent movement out of custody, use the Released Report link from the Sheriff’s incarcerated-individual information page. A release report is more appropriate than assuming a missing roster entry means the person was never booked.
How to Search the Monroe County Jail Roster
- Open the Sheriff’s official incarcerated-individual page.
Starting from the Sheriff page helps avoid similarly named counties and unofficial databases. - Choose the report that matches the task.
Start with the roster or census for current custody. Use the received or released report when you are investigating recent movement. - Search the PDF using the person’s legal name.
Use the Find command in your browser or PDF viewer. If necessary, try a former, maiden, hyphenated or alternate spelling rather than assuming one failed search settles the question. - Match more than the name.
Compare identifiers, booking or custody date, court, arresting agency and other available fields. This is especially important for common names. - Verify the time-sensitive part separately.
A jail report can help establish custody, but bail, court scheduling, release processing and visitation may change. Confirm those details with the jail or responsible court before acting.
What the Census and Roster Fields Mean
The Monroe County census uses compact labels. Some describe custody while others point toward the separate court case. Understanding that distinction prevents a jail report from being treated as a final legal record.
| Field | Practical meaning | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| JID | An identifier used in the jail reporting system to help distinguish records. | Do not assume every agency or court uses the same identifier. |
| Custody date/time | Indicates custody timing recorded in the jail report. | It is not automatically the time of the alleged offense or court filing. |
| Book date/time | Shows booking timing recorded by the jail. | Booking does not establish guilt. |
| Arresting agency | Identifies the agency associated with the arrest information. | The arresting agency is not necessarily the agency currently holding the person. |
| Charge / charge description | Shows charge information associated with the custody record. | A booking charge is not a conviction or final court disposition. |
| Court / court date / judge | Can help identify where the related court matter is being handled. | The jail report is not a substitute for the court’s own record. |
| Bail / bond | May show bail or bond information connected to the custody record. | Do not pay based solely on an old screenshot or third-party listing; verify the current amount and payment route. |
| Expected release | May provide a release-related date or status when populated. | It is not a promise of the exact moment a person will leave the facility. |
If the Person Does Not Appear in the Monroe County Jail Roster
A blank search is not enough to conclude that the person was never arrested or is not in custody. Work through the likely routes in a controlled order rather than searching random county websites.
Monroe County Jail and STAR Academy Are Separate Locations
Monroe County Jail
130 Plymouth Ave. SouthRochester, NY 14614
Jail information: 585-753-4300
Visiting: 585-753-4000
Andrew P. Meloni: STAR Academy
750 East Henrietta RoadRochester, NY 14623
The Sheriff’s Jail Bureau lists this facility separately. Confirm the person’s current location before traveling, sending time-sensitive material or assuming that rules for one location apply identically to the other.
Facility location is different from the arresting agency and from the court handling the case. A Rochester police arrest, for example, does not mean the police department remains the person’s custodian after jail booking.
Recent Bookings and Releases
For a recent intake, check the Sheriff’s Received Report. For recent release activity, use the Released Report linked from the official incarcerated-individual information page.
Do not attach a fixed “booking takes X hours” or “release takes X hours” estimate to Monroe County without an official source. Intake, court orders, bail processing, detainers, transfer arrangements and administrative steps can affect an individual case.
Court, Bail and Warrant Information: Use the Correct Record System
The jail census can point you toward a court and can display bail or bond fields, but legal case status belongs to the court. Verify the responsible court before relying on a hearing date, disposition or payment instruction.
| Need | Official route | Contact / location |
|---|---|---|
| Rochester City criminal matter | Rochester City Court Criminal Branch | 150 S. Plymouth Ave., Rochester, NY 14614 585-371-3413 |
| Monroe County / Supreme Court matter | Monroe County Supreme & County Court, Hall of Justice | 99 Exchange Blvd., Rochester, NY 14614 585-371-3758 |
| Electronic case information | New York eCourts | Coverage varies by court and case; use the court directly if the online system does not show what you need. |
| Bail status | Check current jail information plus the responsible court before payment. | Jail information: 585-753-4300 |
| Warrant question | Responsible court or law-enforcement authority | A warrant is not proof of current jail custody. |
Use the New York Courts directory when you need to confirm which Monroe County court applies. Cases arising in towns or villages can follow a different local court route from a Rochester City Court case.
Monroe County Jail Visitation: Schedule First
The Sheriff publishes social visit times Monday through Friday at 8:15 a.m., 9:15 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. The current incarcerated-individual information page says each incarcerated person at Monroe County Jail or STAR Academy may receive two one-hour visits per week by appointment.
Visitors are told to arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled visit and present valid government-issued photo identification. The Sheriff’s current guidance also publishes specific documentation rules for visitors under 18, including birth-certificate and parental-permission requirements in applicable situations.
Schedule a social visit
Call 585-753-4000 and follow the current Sheriff’s scheduling instructions. Visits are generally scheduled one week in advance.
Professional visits
The Sheriff lists professional visiting hours Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 1:15 p.m.–3:45 p.m. Professional visitors should contact Jail Visits at 585-753-4000.
Video visits
The Sheriff’s current information page links to Securus for video visitation scheduling.
Before entering
Expect screening, identification and dress/property restrictions. Confirm minor documentation and current facility rules before leaving home rather than relying on an older visitor guide.
Phone, Messaging and Video Communication
The current Sheriff’s incarcerated-individual page clearly identifies Securus for video visitation. Current voice-call and electronic-message rates and terms are not stated clearly enough on the present jail page to reproduce here as fixed facts.
Before funding a phone or tablet account, confirm the provider and current rates through the jail or the service link supplied by the Sheriff. Do not assume an older contract, cached vendor page or another county’s rate applies to Monroe County today.
How to Send Money to Someone in Monroe County Jail
The Sheriff’s current guidance names Access Corrections as its money-deposit service. This is important because older Monroe County material may still contain a different payment provider.
Online or mobile app
Access Corrections accepts Visa and Mastercard credit/debit cards through its website and mobile app.
Phone
Access Corrections lists bilingual English/Spanish agents and an automated system at 1-866-345-1884.
Lobby kiosk
The Sheriff states that kiosks are available at Monroe County Jail and STAR Academy. The kiosks accept cash or Visa/Mastercard credit or debit cards.
Deposit availability does not necessarily mean every deposited dollar is immediately spendable. Account obligations or facility rules may affect funds. Check current terms before sending a large amount.
Mail, Publications and Photos
Monroe County’s current Jail Bureau page specifically explains how photographs are handled. Photos arriving through incarcerated-person mail are photocopied for the recipient and the originals are stored with the person’s property. The Sheriff separately identifies certain third-party photo vendors whose delivered photos are inspected and distributed through the property room.
An older official Monroe County mail instruction document also describes USPS-only mail, inmate-identification requirements, restrictions on sending money through mail and publisher-direct rules for books or periodicals. Because that document is older and other jail services have changed since publication, verify the complete current mail rules at 585-753-4300 before sending anything that would be costly or difficult to replace.
Check the current Monroe County Jail Bureau page before mailing.
Jail Records, Police Records, Court Records and Booking Photos Are Different
A common mistake is sending every records question to the jail. The correct custodian depends on what document you actually need.
| Record needed | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Current jail custody | Monroe County Sheriff’s roster/census | This is a custody question. |
| Criminal case / disposition | New York Courts / responsible court clerk | The court, not a jail roster, controls the case record. |
| County agency record | Monroe County FOIL process | New York FOIL provides a process for requesting qualifying agency records. |
| Police incident/report | The law-enforcement agency that owns that report | The arresting or reporting agency may be different from the jail custodian. |
| Booking photo | The responsible Sheriff’s records route | Do not assume every photo is displayed publicly or releasable in every circumstance. |
Monroe County FOIL route
Monroe County identifies its Records Access Officer through the Communications Department at 39 W. Main St., Rochester, NY 14614, phone 585-753-1080. The county provides online and written request routes.
Under the county’s FOIL guidance, the agency generally must make the requested record available, deny the request, or acknowledge the request and provide an approximate response date within five business days of receipt. That does not mean every record will be produced within five days. The county’s online guidance warns that some requests may take 20 days or longer.
The county also explains that New York’s judiciary is outside the normal agency definition for FOIL purposes. For a court file, use the responsible court rather than sending a county FOIL request merely because the case arose in Monroe County.

Health Concerns, Property and PREA Reporting
Health or medication concern
The Sheriff’s public jail pages do not provide enough permanent family-facing medical detail to responsibly invent a medication-delivery procedure here. For a current welfare, medication or health concern, call the jail information line at 585-753-4300 and ask for the appropriate current route. Privacy rules may limit what staff can disclose about another person.
For an immediate life-threatening emergency outside the jail, use emergency services. Do not rely on a web article for urgent medical intervention.
Property
The Sheriff’s Jail Bureau identifies a Jail Property unit, but older property documents should not be treated as proof of today’s pickup hours. Before traveling to retrieve property, call 585-753-4300 to verify the current procedure, required identification and pickup availability.
PREA and sexual-abuse reporting
The Sheriff’s Office publishes a zero-tolerance PREA policy. Third-party reports of sexual abuse or sexual harassment involving someone in its jail facilities can be made 24 hours a day to Monroe County Jail Administration at 585-753-4178.
If the Person Was Transferred Out of Monroe County Custody
If the Sheriff’s reports no longer show the person, first determine whether the person was released or transferred. Then use the custody system that matches the transfer rather than searching unrelated jail directories.
New York state prison custody
For a person who may have moved into New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision custody, use the official DOCCS lookup.
Federal custody
If there is a factual reason to believe the person entered federal Bureau of Prisons custody, use the federal inmate locator. BOP records and county-jail records are separate systems.
A BOP result saying someone was released or is not in BOP custody does not prove the person is free from every form of custody. Likewise, a New York state record should not be used to infer current Monroe County jail placement.

Use Jail and Booking Information Responsibly
Jail information changes. A downloaded PDF, screenshot or third-party copy can become stale after a release, transfer, court order or record update. Recheck the responsible official source when current status matters.
An arrest is not a conviction. A booking charge is not the final court disposition. A warrant does not establish current incarceration, and a projected release field does not confirm that someone has been physically released.
Public records should not be used to harass, threaten, stalk, intimidate or impersonate another person. For employment, housing, licensing or other regulated decisions, determine what federal and New York law permits rather than treating a jail-roster entry as a background-screening conclusion.
Monroe County Jail Roster FAQs
Which Monroe County does this jail roster page cover?
This page covers Monroe County, New York, including the Sheriff’s jail facilities in Rochester. It does not cover similarly named Monroe Counties in Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania or other states.
How often is the Monroe County Jail roster updated?
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says its incarcerated-individual roster and census are updated daily Monday through Friday. For a time-sensitive weekend or holiday question, call the jail information line at 585-753-4300.
What is the difference between the roster and census?
Both are official Sheriff custody resources. The census provides detailed fields that can include identifiers, custody and booking dates, court, bail or bond, arresting agency and charge information. If one report does not answer your question, check the other official report rather than switching immediately to a third-party directory.
How can I check a very recent Monroe County booking?
Use the Sheriff’s Received Report as well as the current roster/census. If the arrest is very recent and confirmation is urgent, call 585-753-4300 because the published roster and census have a stated Monday-through-Friday update schedule.
Why would a person have a court case but not appear in the jail roster?
A criminal case, warrant and current incarceration are different things. A person can have an active or pending court matter without being housed in Monroe County Jail. Verify case information through the responsible New York court.
Does a charge on the Monroe County roster mean the person was convicted?
No. A booking charge is an allegation associated with the custody record. The court record should be used to determine later case events, disposition or sentence.
How do I verify bail for someone in Monroe County Jail?
Review the current jail information and then confirm the amount, responsible court and accepted payment route before paying. Call jail information at 585-753-4300 when necessary. Do not rely on a generic percentage rule or an old third-party payment page.
Can I walk in for a Monroe County Jail visit?
The Sheriff’s current pages conflict. The Jail Bureau page describes limited walk-in requests, while the dedicated incarcerated-individual information page says no walk-in visits are available. Schedule in advance and call 585-753-4000 before traveling.
How can I send money to an incarcerated person?
The current Sheriff page identifies Access Corrections. Deposits can be made online or through the mobile app, by phone at 1-866-345-1884, or through lobby kiosks. Verify current fees and account details before paying.
Where should I search if someone was transferred to state or federal custody?
For New York state correctional custody, use the official NY DOCCS lookup. For federal Bureau of Prisons custody, use the BOP inmate locator. First confirm that a transfer is plausible rather than searching unrelated systems at random.
