Do Not Use the 2016 PREA Audit as a Current Capacity Source
Nobles County still hosts a PREA audit dated February 11, 2016. That historical audit reported an 80-bed design capacity and found 42 applicable standards met with none marked not met during that audit period.
The newer 2026 Minnesota DOC inspection lists an approved capacity of 88 secure coed beds, so use the newer state inspection for current capacity context.

Date accuracy: the report says that next authority period begins September 1, 2026. Before that date, do not describe the future period as already in effect.
Findings Recorded in the June 2026 Inspection
- Ongoing plumbing deficiencies and water intrusion/damage were documented.
- Deteriorated shower doors were identified as a safety and security concern.
- One reviewed inmate-property inventory lacked a required signature.
- One reviewed medication administration record lacked a recorded delivery.
- One stock-medication count did not match the medication-count record.
- One correctional officer lacked required interpersonal-communication/diversity training before independent assignment.
Medication Comment
The inspector also noted that the facility had not contacted the prescribing doctor before stopping a medication an inmate had taken before incarceration.
Do not describe these automatically as unresolved current conditions. The inspection required corrective responses. The original inspection report by itself does not tell a reader which corrective actions were later completed, accepted or remain pending.
Juvenile Compliance
The 2026 report documents a JJDPA Rural Exception allowing specified delinquent-juvenile holding up to 24 hours excluding weekends and holidays. The inspector reported 15 juveniles held or processed since October 1, 2025 and zero JJDPA violations for the reviewed period.
The report also says juveniles are no longer held in the jail for court holding; secure court holding next to the courtrooms is used instead.
