Tacoma Jail Roster: Start With Pierce County LINX, Then Follow the Court or Custody Trail
For an adult arrested in Tacoma who may be held in the county jail, start with the official Pierce County LINX jail roster. Tacoma does not need a separate city-jail roster for this search: Pierce County operates the Main Jail and New Jail in Tacoma, while court, police-record, state-custody and federal-custody questions use different systems.
Tacoma Custody and Records: Use the Right Official System
A Tacoma arrest can lead to several different records. The arresting agency, jail operator, court, records custodian and later correctional agency may all be different.
Pierce County LINX
Use LINX to view the Pierce County Jail roster or search by an inmate’s last name. The roster can also connect booking charges to related Superior Court cases.
Tacoma Municipal Court
Use the Municipal Court for qualifying City of Tacoma misdemeanor, gross-misdemeanor, criminal-traffic and infraction matters.
Pierce County courts
LINX provides Superior Court case information and links into the Pierce County court system. Felony cases are filed in Superior Court.
Washington DOC
Use Washington DOC when a person may have transferred from local jail custody into state incarceration or community custody.
| What you need | Best first source | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Current Pierce County jail custody | LINX jail roster | It is the county’s current public roster route. |
| Tacoma police incident report, CAD or 911 record | South Sound 911 / Tacoma public-record route | Police records are separate from jail records. |
| Jail record or booking-photo request | Pierce County Sheriff Public Disclosure | Most inmate jail records, including booking photos, are confidential or exempt beyond the public roster fields. |
| Tacoma municipal warrant or city case | Tacoma Municipal Court | A court warrant is not the same as current jail custody. |
| Victim custody notification | Washington VINE | VINE provides custody-status notification services. |
| Federal prison custody | Federal BOP locator | Use the federal system only when federal Bureau of Prisons custody is plausible. |
How to Search the Tacoma-Area Jail Roster in LINX
LINX is the official Pierce County route for the jail roster. It can display the entire roster or search current inmates by last name.
Open Pierce County LINX
Use the official LINX website and choose the jail-roster function rather than a copied roster on a commercial directory.
Search by last name
Start with the person’s current legal surname. If you have uncertainty about spelling or a prior surname, verify identity rather than assuming the first similar name is correct.
Open the booking record
Review the booking entry and note the booking ID, booking date, charging agency, court jurisdiction, court date, bail/sentence fields and release information when displayed.
Save the booking ID and facility
The booking ID is useful for mail and jail communication. Facility location also matters for attorney visits and other jail logistics. Keep the booking ID private when possible instead of reposting it publicly.
Move legal questions to the court record
A booking screen is custody information. Use the relevant court record for filings, hearings, dispositions and the legal outcome.
What Pierce County Publicly Releases on the Jail Roster
Pierce County’s public-record guidance identifies the following inmate information as publicly releasable through the jail roster. This is more useful than assuming every field on a third-party directory is an official Pierce County field.
| Roster information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| Inmate name | Identity field; verify carefully when names are similar. |
| Booking date | Date associated with the jail booking, not a conviction date. |
| Charge | Booking/case information that can change as the court case develops. |
| Warrant type | A warrant-related field; a warrant outside a booking record does not itself prove present custody. |
| Charging agency | The agency associated with the charge; it is not necessarily the jail operator. |
| Court jurisdiction | Helps route the case to the correct court system. |
| Court date | A scheduled court-related date; recheck the court source for changes. |
| Sentence date / bail | Can reflect sentence or bail information; verify current bail with the responsible court/jail before paying. |
| Sentence / fine | Court-related information that should be confirmed against the case record. |
| Release date | A release field when published; current roster absence still needs verification if status matters. |
- Arrest does not equal conviction.
- A booking charge is not necessarily the final charge or disposition.
- A warrant does not prove current incarceration.
- A listed bail figure should be verified before anyone sends money.
- A screenshot can become stale; reopen the live record before acting.
No Tacoma Jail Roster Result? Check These Local Possibilities
| Problem | Possible explanation | Next action | Official route |
|---|---|---|---|
| The arrest was very recent | Intake, booking or public-system entry may still be in progress. | Recheck LINX and call Jail Booking if the answer is time-sensitive. | LINX / 253-798-4590 |
| The person was listed earlier | The current roster does not include released inmates. | Verify release/transfer through the jail, VINE or the receiving custody system. | Pierce Jail / VINE / DOC |
| Person is on home detention | Pierce County says home-detention participants are not included on the current jail roster. | Use the responsible program/court rather than repeatedly searching the jail list. | Pierce County court/corrections route |
| Person is at Western State Hospital | Pierce County identifies Western State Hospital as an exclusion from the jail roster. | Follow the court and responsible health/custody route; do not treat roster absence as a case dismissal. | Court / responsible agency |
| Breaking the Cycle participant | Pierce County identifies Breaking the Cycle participants as outside the current inmate-list display. | Use the responsible program/court route. | Pierce County |
| State sentence or transfer | The person may now be under Washington DOC jurisdiction. | Search DOC by name or DOC number. | Washington DOC search |
| Federal case/custody | Local roster may no longer be the relevant system. | Use the BOP locator only when federal Bureau of Prisons custody is plausible. | BOP Inmate Locator |
Tacoma Municipal Court, District Court or Superior Court?
The jail does not decide which court owns the case. Tacoma Municipal Court handles qualifying City of Tacoma misdemeanor, gross-misdemeanor, criminal-traffic and infraction matters. Felonies are filed in Pierce County Superior Court; other county-level matters may use District Court.
Tacoma Municipal Court
930 Tacoma Ave S, Room 841, Tacoma, WA 98402
253-591-5357
Counter: Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Phone: 8:30 a.m.–noon and 1–4 p.m.
Pierce County Superior Court
Use LINX to locate Superior Court criminal cases, charges, proceedings and calendars. A felony arising from a Tacoma arrest belongs in Superior Court rather than Tacoma Municipal Court.
Pierce County District Court
Use Pierce County’s court routing and LINX links for district-court matters. Do not infer the court solely from the arresting agency.
Warrant question in Tacoma Municipal Court
The court says a warrant-hearing request to quash a municipal warrant can be made in person at the service counter or by email to MunicipalCourt@Tacoma.gov. The warrant remains outstanding until a hearing occurs and the judge orders it quashed; the court does not treat a request alone as a quash.
Recent felony arrest: useful local arraignment detail
Pierce County Superior Court guidance says a person arrested the previous night on a felony is generally scheduled for arraignment at 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. The county advises checking LINX after 10:30 a.m. to find the calendar. Court schedules can change, so verify the live calendar before traveling.
Bail and Bond: Verify the Court, Amount and Payment Route First
Cash bond
Pierce County explains a cash bond as payment of the full bail amount. If the defendant makes the required appearances, the court handles the bond’s later disposition according to the case and applicable rules.
Bail bond company
A private bail-bond company typically charges a percentage and may require collateral. The fee paid to the company is not the same thing as refundable court cash bail.
Where cash bail may be handled later
Pierce County Superior Court guidance explains that the refund route can depend on whether charges were filed and whether the case has a Superior Court cause number. Once a charged case has a cause number, bail money can move into the Clerk’s Office process. Keep the receipt and verify the current court handling the case rather than assuming the jail controls a later refund.
Never assume a payment guarantees immediate release. Holds, multiple cases, court orders, processing and other custody issues can affect release timing.
Pierce County’s Two Tacoma Jail Buildings
Main Jail
910 Tacoma Ave S
Tacoma, WA 98402
The Main Jail is one of the two county jail facilities in Tacoma. Use the roster and Jail Booking line to verify the inmate’s current facility rather than assuming from the arrest location.
New Jail
701 Nollmeyer Ln
Tacoma, WA 98402
The New Jail is a separate Pierce County corrections building. Housing location matters for video-visitation scheduling and attorney-visit logistics.
Video Visitation Is the Current Public Visit Route
Pierce County uses Securus Technologies for video visitation. Visitors need a Securus account plus photo identification and an email address or phone number. The person who schedules the visit is charged for it.
Current limits
- Maximum three video visits per week.
- Video-visitation hours run from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., subject to housing schedule and operational interruptions.
- Visits are monitored for facility-rule compliance.
- Remote visits can have multiple participants as long as the scheduling visitor remains present.
Housing schedule matters
Main Jail and New Jail housing tiers rotate morning and afternoon access on odd/even dates. Select the correct facility and available time shown for the inmate; choosing the wrong time can create a chargeable visit or cancellation.
Published New Jail odd/even rotation
| Date | Lower tier, bunks 1–42 | Upper tier, bunks 43–84 |
|---|---|---|
| Odd-numbered day | 8:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m. | 3:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m. |
| Even-numbered day | 3:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m. | 8:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m. |
For the Main Jail at 910 Tacoma Ave S, Pierce County publishes the same morning/afternoon odd-even concept by lower and upper tier rather than the New Jail bunk-number ranges. Always use the current Securus availability shown for the inmate because operational needs can cancel a visit without notice.
Inmate Phone Calls
Pierce County says inmates cannot receive incoming calls. Housing-unit phones are used for outgoing calls during unit-specific hours, and calls can last up to 20 minutes.
Call rules
- Calls may be recorded and monitored; attorney calls are the stated exception.
- Three-way and non-typical collect calls are not allowed.
- TTY service is available on request for people who are hearing impaired.
Securus support
Prepaid calling is provided through Securus. For account, blocked-number or prepaid-call help, Pierce County lists Securus Customer Service at 800-844-6591.
How to Address Mail and Send Books
Ordinary inmate correspondence goes to the Main Jail mailing address even when the person is housed elsewhere in the Pierce jail system. Include the inmate’s full name and booking ID, and put the sender’s return address on the envelope.
Mailing format
(Inmate’s full name) (Booking ID #)
910 Tacoma Ave. S.
Tacoma, WA 98402
Pierce County says ordinary original mail contents have been scanned since April 15, 2020; after scanning, originals are shredded and the scanned copies are forwarded to the inmate. Legal mail between an attorney/court and the inmate is treated separately when properly identified.
Book and magazine rules
Beginning June 1, 2024, an inmate may receive up to three books per month. New paperback books or magazines may be shipped directly from a publisher, distributor, bookstore or internet bookseller. Hardback books, used books/magazines, spiral-bound books and certain other formats are not accepted.
Before mailing, avoid common rejection problems
Do not put cash, personal checks or prohibited contraband in an envelope. Pierce County inspects incoming and outgoing mail for security and can reject unsuitable items. Use plain correspondence, follow the current approved-items page for photographs and enclosures, and use the official inmate-money process instead of mailing funds.
Depositing Money and Commissary Cutoffs
Pierce County directs family and friends to TouchPay for inmate deposits. Funds can be added online or by phone at 1-866-232-1899; the published facility locator number is 298402.
Weekly cutoff
The commissary page says money must be received by Sunday at 9 p.m. for all inmates. Commissary is distributed weekly, and classification level affects the number of items that can be ordered.
Indigent items
Pierce County defines an inmate as indigent when the account has less than $1. Available indigent items are limited to hygiene and writing materials.
Check TouchPay’s current transaction fee before confirming a deposit; do not assume the full amount charged to a card is identical to the amount credited to the inmate account.
Medical, Medication and Mental-Health Questions
Pierce County says Correctional Healthcare Partners provides jail medical, dental and pharmacy services. Medical staff are onsite 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and inmates receive an intake health screening.
Sick call
Inmates can submit a medical kite. The county describes weekday sick call and triage based on the nature and urgency of the request.
Medication
Medical staff verify prescriptions with the prescribing doctor or pharmacy. The county states medication passes are conducted three times a day.
Mental health
The jail’s mental-health program provides services in custody and helps connect people to community services where appropriate. Privacy rules can limit what staff may disclose to family members.
For an immediate life-threatening emergency outside the jail, call 911. For a concern about a person already in custody, contact Jail Booking at 253-798-4590 so staff can route the concern.
Public Records, Police Reports and Booking Photos
Different agencies own different Tacoma-area records. A jail record request should not be sent to the court, and a Tacoma Police incident/911 request should not be treated as a Pierce jail-roster request.
Pierce jail records
Use the Sheriff’s Public Disclosure Unit for inmate jail records. Pierce County says most inmate records, including booking photos, are confidential or exempt beyond the fields released on the public roster.
Tacoma Police records
South Sound 911 coordinates Tacoma Police incident reports, CAD records, traffic citations and 911 audio. Use Tacoma’s public-record guidance to reach the current request channel.
Court records
Tacoma Municipal Court keeps municipal-court records; Pierce County courts/LINX handle the appropriate county court records. Court records are not substitutes for real-time custody confirmation.
Pierce Sheriff public-record timing and fees
For general Sheriff public-record requests, Pierce County’s current fee schedule includes $0.15 per printed page, $0.10 per gigabyte for electronic records, $0.10 per page when paper records must be scanned, actual storage-media/postage costs, and $0.63 per minute for body-worn or dash-camera redaction. A request may receive the records, an acknowledgment with an estimate, a clarification request, or a denial with the applicable exemption within five business days.
For inmate jail records specifically, the county’s jail-record page lists paper copies at $0.15 per page and CD/DVD copies at $1.15 per disk plus postage. Payment is required before those records are provided.
Do not abandon an active records request. Pierce County says a request may be closed after 30 days if the requester does not claim, pay for or review assembled records, or make another arrangement with the agency.
VINE Notifications, PREA Reporting and Property
Washington VINE
VINE provides custody-status information and notification services. Washington’s published VINE number is 1-877-846-3492. Use it for release/transfer alerts rather than repeatedly refreshing a screenshot.
PREA concern
Pierce County publishes a Jail PREA Coordinator number at 253-798-4823. Use the jail’s PREA route for sexual-abuse or sexual-harassment concerns involving custody.
Police property / evidence
The joint Property Room is at 930 Tacoma Ave S, Room B-76 (Basement), Tacoma. Tacoma Police property questions use 253-591-5984; Pierce County property questions use 253-798-7522.
If a criminal case is pending, a defendant may need counsel to obtain a property release from the prosecutor. For a closed case, a claim generally starts with the originating agency. Pierce County says review can take up to four weeks.
If LINX Is the Wrong Custody System
Washington DOC
Search Washington DOC when the person may have entered state incarceration or community custody. DOC warns that custody data can change quickly, so verify a time-sensitive status.
Federal BOP
The BOP locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. A BOP result is not a substitute for local jail, U.S. Marshals or other custody verification when the person has not entered BOP custody.
Another local jail
Use another county or regional jail only when the arresting agency, court, booking record or transfer information points there. Random county-by-county searching can create false matches.

Tacoma Jail Roster FAQs
Where do I search for someone arrested in Tacoma?
Start with the official Pierce County LINX jail roster for current adult county-jail custody. Then use the appropriate Tacoma or Pierce County court record if you need case information.
Is there a separate Tacoma City Jail roster?
For the main adult local-jail search covered here, use Pierce County’s official jail roster. Pierce County operates the Main Jail and New Jail in Tacoma; do not assume a separate “Tacoma City Jail” roster is required.
Who may be missing from the current Pierce County jail roster?
Pierce County says the current inmate list excludes released people and identifies home detention, Western State Hospital and Breaking the Cycle as situations not represented on the regular current roster.
Does the Pierce County roster provide booking photos?
Pierce County says most inmate jail records, including booking photos, are confidential or exempt from public disclosure. Use the official roster fields and the Sheriff’s Public Disclosure Unit for any record request.
Which court handles a Tacoma arrest?
It depends on the case. Tacoma Municipal Court handles qualifying city misdemeanor, gross-misdemeanor, criminal-traffic and infraction cases. Felonies are filed in Pierce County Superior Court; other matters may use District Court.
When is a recent felony defendant arraigned in Pierce County Superior Court?
Pierce County guidance says someone arrested the previous night on a felony is generally scheduled at 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m., and advises checking LINX after 10:30 a.m. for the calendar. Verify the live calendar because schedules can change.
Can I visit a Pierce County Jail inmate in person?
Pierce County currently states that in-person visitation is unavailable and the public reception desk remains closed. The current public route is video visitation through Securus, subject to housing schedules and operational restrictions.
How do I address mail to a Pierce County Jail inmate?
Address it to the inmate’s full name and booking ID at 910 Tacoma Ave. S., Tacoma, WA 98402, and include the sender’s return address. Ordinary original mail is scanned and then shredded; properly identified legal mail is handled separately.
How can I add commissary money?
Pierce County directs deposits to TouchPay online or by phone at 1-866-232-1899 using facility locator 298402. The county says funds must be received by Sunday at 9 p.m. for the weekly commissary cycle.
What should I do if someone disappears from LINX?
Do not assume why. The person may have been released, transferred, moved to state custody or be in a status excluded from the current roster. Verify through Jail Booking, VINE, Washington DOC or another confirmed receiving system.
Before You Pay, Visit, Mail or Drive
- Search live Pierce County LINX again; do not rely on an old screenshot.
- Confirm whether the person is still in custody and which Tacoma jail building currently houses them.
- Identify Tacoma Municipal, Pierce District or Pierce Superior Court correctly before relying on a court date or bail figure.
- Verify every active hold and the accepted bail route before sending money.
- Confirm actual release before arranging pickup or travel.
- Do not drive to the jail expecting ordinary in-person visitation while the county closure notice remains active.
- For video visits, select the correct facility, tier schedule and current Securus time.
- Put the Booking ID on inmate correspondence and do not send an irreplaceable original.
- Confirm the inmate before using TouchPay facility locator 298402, and remember the Sunday 9 p.m. commissary cutoff.
- Use South Sound 911 for Tacoma Police incident/911 records rather than treating LINX as a police-report system.
- Use VINE when custody-change notifications would be more useful than repeated manual checking.
- Treat arrest and booking information as allegations/custody data, not proof of guilt.
Use Jail and Court Information Responsibly
An arrest, booking, roster entry, charge or warrant does not establish guilt. Court records control the legal case outcome, and custody information can change after release, transfer, a court order or a database update.
Do not use jail information to harass, threaten, stalk or shame a person or their family. Reopen the live official source before traveling, sending money, mailing property, scheduling a visit or making a claim about someone’s current custody status.
